small scale puppy mill
commonly outdoors with dirty living conditions, inadequate water (amount of quality), untreated medical conditions, lack of grooming, sale to individuals (local or internet)
comm PE findings in dogs from puppy mills
a. malnutrition/starvation (vs. cachexia is involuntary), pica/scavenging/cannibalism, dehydration, dental disease, ear infections, testicular and mammary neoplasia, parasites
b. effects of wire bottom cages (trauma, scarring, inflammation)
c. limited/no exercise (decreased muscling)
d. Unsanitary conditions, lack of grooming
untreated severe dental dz leads to
loss of teeth, pain, infection abscess endocarditis, amyloidosis sepsis
behavioral conditions seen in dogs from puppy mills
stereotypical behaviors (pacing, circling, pawing, licking, bar biting, compulsive staring)
