What does a pharmacist do in a community pharmacy?
Review prescriptions for drug interactions/safety of medication in the patient. Provide self-care counseling to patients (over-the-counter). Check prescriptions for accuracy. Offer medications reviews. Identify, resolve and prevent medication related problems. Provide educational clinics to patients to improve knowledge and health. Work collaboratively with other members of the health care team. Expanded scope of practice (injections, prescribing for minor ailments)
What are the top three services offered by pharmacists?
Diabetes care, smoking cessation and medication management
What does a pharmacist do in a hospital?
Evaluating each patient’s medication needs on the basis of patient-specific information and best practice evidence. Provides the patient and the healthcare team with up-to-date drug information. Monitoring, recommending or making changes to drug therapy throughout a patient’s stay in hospital. Teaching patients how to take their medication, monitor how it is working and manage any adverse effects. Working with the patient and others to help patients obtain their medications after discharge
Describe the work of an urban community pharmacist
The may not know all the patients. There is not as close a connection with the community. There are a larger number of health care providers with less personal communication
Describe the work of a rural community pharmacist
They know the patient by name. They are a respected and vital member of the community. They work closely with other health care providers with stronger communication
Describe the work of an urban hospital pharmacist
There is a large number of staff so there is an increased chance for collaboration. They can be specialists in specific areas. Clinical services is more a focus
Describe the work of a rural hospital pharmacist
Smaller number of staff so they may work alone more. They are a generalist in all areas. Drug distribution is more of a priority
Name the different type of community pharmacies
Independant, banner, franchise, chain, grocery/mass merchandisers
Describe what is an independent pharmacy
The owner has complete control of the business
Describe what is a banner pharmacy
Independent pharmacies that are affiliated with a central office and pays fees to use a name. Examples: pharmasave, IDA, Price Watchers
Describe what is a franchise pharmacy
Do not own the physical store but lease a property. May have access to programs/purchasing through a head office. Example: Shoppers Drug Mart
Describe what is a chain pharmacy
Employee Pharmacy Managers but head office directs all marketing and programs. Example: PharmaPlus
Describe what is a grocery/mass merchandisers pharmacy
Departments within a major outlet who follow all marketing, buying and programs from a Head Office. Examples: Safeway, Sobeys, Wal-Mart, Target, Costco, London Drugs
