Lecture 5 Flashcards
What is the apnoea-hypopnea index how is it used to diagnose sleep related breathing disorders
An way of measuring the severity of apnoeas and hypopnea
Can be used by practitioners to assess parties and aid diagnosis/treatment plans
AHI = (No A+H)/ No sleep hours
<5 per hour is normal 5-15/hour is mild OSA and not usually treated
> 15 hour sugges clinical significance and generally leads to diagnosis and treatment
Another way of conceptualising = every 4 mins there is at least 10 seconds of reduced air flow
An OSA = effort to breathe but no airflow due to an obstruction in the windpipe lasts ~ 10 secs
H = ~10 secs but reduced airflow by 30%
4% O desaturation caused by wondrous becoming narrowed not blocked
What are sleep related breathing disorders what is the difference between central and obstructive sleep apnoea?
