a species that has a strong role in structuring a community by enhancing the survival, growth, and recruitment of other species; POSITIVE impact on other species; creates the foundational habitat
2
Q
Facilitation

interactions between two or more species in which at least one species benefits, and NONE are negatively affected
3
Q
What do foundation species do?
A
Provide substrate (ex: corals)
Reduce abiotic and biotic stressors (hypoxia, dessication, etc.)
Increase food supply
4
Q
Positive impacts on the community
A
Higher species biomass, diversity, and abundance
Wider distributional limits
Elevated rates of propagule retention, settlement, and survivorship
