Lecture 5 Flashcards
What is value stream mapping?
- data rich, collected by a team
- visual representation of process regarding material and information flow
- helps you see the flow of material and information as a product or service moves through the value stream
Definition of a value stream map
A value stream map is all the actions that are required to take a product or service, from order to delivery. It is a graphical representation of the entire value strwam which includes material information and product flow
The benefits of the value stream map (7)
- graphically represents the total value stream
- provides shared understanding in a common language
- highlight waste
- visualize flow and connection of Lean techniques
- identifies process bottlenecks
- improve the bigger picture, rather than individual processes
- forms the basis for continuous improvement
Levels of a value stream
- process
- single plant
- multiple plants
- across companies
Principles for creating a VSM (value stream map)
the diagram needs to be one sheet of paper, use the standard symbols for the diagram. Use the standard symbols for the diagram, capture all the data yourself. Walk, understand & validate the process, involve people
What is value stream mapping?
Once the product family is selected. The mapping process starts with the current state flow with value add and non-value add activities
Value stream mapping in 5 steps
- determine product family to set the scope
- draw the process flow map
- add the material and information flow
- add data in the data collection boxes
- add process time and lead time data
Processing time
process in steps of each step added
machine cycle time
all value adds
inventory time
inventory (parts)/ output per day
process lead time (PLT)
processing time + inventory time
Process cycle efficiency (PCE) %
value add time/ process lead time (PLT) (x 100)
The value stream map includes:
- information flow
- material flow
- time line
Information flow
customer orders fed into the production control
Material flow
Shows movement of materials from upstream to downstream
