Lecture 5 Flashcards
Electron transport chain
What does the electron transport chain do?
converts “reducing power” in the form of NADH and FADH2 into direct ATP energy currency
where does electron transport chain occur?
inner mitochondrial matrix
Which complexes are involved in proton pumping to the intermembrane space?
complex, 3, 1, 4
where is complex 2 and what is its role?
sits on the outer surface of the membrane and not involved in proton pumping
What is the purpose of a prosthetic group which each complex has
these prosthetic groups fascilitate the transfer of electrons from donor molecules such as NADH to acceptors within the membrane
What is the name of complex 1
NADH CoQ oxidoreductase
What is the name of complex2
succinate CoQ oxidoreductase
What is the name of complex 3
CoQH2 cytochrome c oxidoreductase
What is the name of complex 4
cytochrome c oxidase
Overall in aerobic respiration how much NADH, ATP and FADH2 are produced?
10 NADH
2 FADH2
4 ATP
overall the process of the electron transport chain is what kind of phosphorylation
oxidative phosphorylation
in general define chemiosmosis
H+ being pumped back into the mitochondrial matrix via ATP synthase pump
- an energy coupling mechanism that uses energy stored in the form of H+ gradient across a membrane to drive cellular work
true or false: cyt c and CoQ are part of the complexes for the electron transport chain?
false; they are not; they are free to move about in the inner membrane; they just connect the complexes as they shuttle the electrons from one complex to the next
Is ATP generated during chemiosmosis?
yes, by the movement of hydrogen ions across the membrane during cellular respiration
true or false; for every two electrons, one O2 molecule is reduced to two molecules of H2O
true
