Lecture 4 - Identity False belief Flashcards

1
Q

why are identity beliefs special

A

location beliefs = relations between separate object entities (object and diff spatial locations)
identity beliefs = one object that is perceived or identified in different, incompatible ways. Whate varies is how the object is represented
Spatial location beliefs could in principle be tracked with non-metarepresentational proxies/ rules
This may not work for identity situations because what vaires is how the object is represented - there is no alternative to using meta-representations to understand an identity FB
= thus if infants can pass implicit / indirect / spontaneous FB identity tests, this boosts early competence theories; if not, two-systems theories are supported

Q

crucial challenge for 2 -systems / dual theories

A

according to them a key signature limitation of the implicit / automatic system is that it only conputes location FB, not identity FB

Q

what is the perfect litmus tests for two-systems theory and why

A

Identity tests
if early infant FB relies on a different implicit system, then infants should be able to pass location FB, but fail identity FB tests
