Lecture 4 - Fundamentals Principles of Thermodynamics Flashcards
What is continuum physics?
Uses parameters such as as concentration, volume, viscosity, dielectric constants, conductivity etc which are based on molecular properties of matter but are defined as phenomenology. This means that the parameters are defined for sufficiently are homogeneous phases.
What is a system?
An aggregate of elements with interrelations. Systems with interrelations which are not simply relations are called dynamic systems. These are the systems where thermodynamic principles can be applied.
What is system theory?
Calculates the kinetic interplay of individual elements.
How does thermodynamics consider a system?
Thermodynamics considers a system simple as a continuum which stand in a defined interrelation with its environment. The limit of this continuum does not have to be a wall or membrane.
What is an isolated system?
The idealised system that does not exchange any kind of energy with its environment.
What is a closed system?
Can exchange all types of energy with its environment but not matter.
What is an opened system?
Can exchange both energy and matter with its environment.
