Lecture 4 Flashcards
1
Q
Shear in reinforced concrete
A
In this lecture you will learn
• How to determine whether a beam requires
shear reinforcing using empirical formulae
• to calculate how much shear reinforcing to
specify using a variable angle truss model
• How to detail shear reinforcing

Q
Note:
A
-We must ensure that the shear strength of a beam (VRd) is greater that the ultimate shear
load (VEd)
-We assume that concrete does not contribute to shear strength of the member after shear
cracks form
-Shear failure is a brittle failure mode - therefore we always provide minimum reinforcement for beams (not necessary for slabs)
