lecture 4 Flashcards
face validity
- extent to which measurement method appears on its face to measure the construct of interest
- largely subjective
- usually assessed informally - part of pilot study
10 item sub scale of conscientiousness - Goldberg, 1992 - get upset easily - not face valid for this sub scale as it measures emotional stability
content validity
extent to which a measure ‘covers’ the construct of interest
assessed by carefully checking the measurement method against the conceptual definition of the construct
criterion validity
extent to which peoples scores on a measure are correlated with other variables that one would expect them to be correlated with construct being measured
e.g. expect test anxiety scores to positively correlated with general anxiety and blood pressure during examination period
concurrent validity
when construction and criterion validity are measured at the same time
- how well doest test correlate with other established test at around the same time
predictive validity
- when criterion is measured at some point in the future
- how well does the test credit something in the future such as job performance or degree grade
discriminant validity
extent to which scores on a measure are not correlated with measures of variables that are conceptually distinct
- a new scale should not correlate with other scales designed to measure a different construct
