IPA - A Flashcards
meaning making
accept that meaning making take place in context of narratives, discourse, metaphors. primary purposes of IPA are to gain insight to experience – always intertwined with language
elitist
criticism could be seen as elitist - suggesting those having access to right level of fluency are allowed to describe their experience
lived experience
creates an account if lived experience in its own terms rather than one prescribed by pre-existing theoretical conceptions
complex topics
useful for examining topics which are complex, ambiguous and emotionally laden e.g. pain - elusive involving complex psycho somatic interactions which are hard to articulate
small sample
small sample enables micro-level reading of participants accounts
- offers possibility of some entree in understanding of the elusive condition
- inquiry is sharpened by IPA’s inductive, intepretative analysing providing illumination of what is presented + grounding that firmly in examination of what they participant has said (smith + osborn, 2015)
