Lecture 4 Flashcards
When devising bilingual intervention what are two important considerations to keep in mind?
Linguistic and cultural considerations
What are the practice guidelines outlined in professional bodies of work? Are these guidelines being followed in clinical practice?
> SLP should support both languages> Should have near-native proficiency in both> Understand cultural variability > Ability to conduct interventionin L1- No these aren’t being followed in real life - most SLPs are monolingual and report using only one language of intervention
Describe some research into unilingual therapy (only one language) and what the outcomes of these experiments have told us about this approach.
> Teaching children narrative in L1 yielded better results than teaching in L2 (more comfortable, more practice at home) > Teaching new words in L2 using L1 extensions was more effective What this tells us: transfer occurs when the goals target overlapping features of both languages such as narratives or expansions
Kohnert(2008) concluded that bilingual children with LI will probably not spontaneously transfer…
info learned in L1 to L2 - better to provide intervention in both = the ideal
What are the two approaches to multilingual therapy?
- Bilingual appraoch2. Cross-linguistic approach
In bilingual approach therapist selects LT and ST goals in both languages within single treatment session and addresses them in treatment using the following 3 options…
Option 1. Focus on shared underlying info processing skills that are a common area of WEAKNESS across both languagesOption 2. Select goals that focus on STRUCTURAL aspects of language content/form shared b/w the two. (cognates) Option 3. Select goals that improve metalinguistic ability by comparing and contrasting vocab, grammar and pragmatics of both Ls
The bilingual appraoch is highly innovative with a sound theoretical basis but what is the problem?
Rarely used in therapy and not enough evidence to support its efficacy
In a cross linguistic approach the SLP targets each language separately
