Lecture 4 Flashcards
1
Q
Chemical bond
A
The attractive force that holds the atoms together.
2
Q
Ionic bonding
A
A type of bonding where atoms lose or gain electrons. Eg NaCl, sodium chloride
3
Q
Covalent bonding
A
A type of bonding where atoms share electrons. Eg. Water
2 types:
Non-polar/Pure covalent - equal sharing of electrons.
Polar covalent - unequal sharing of electrons.
4
Q
Electronegativity
A
A measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons.
Less than 0.2 is pure covalent.
0.2 to 1.6 is polar covalent.
Greater than 2.0 is ionic.
1.6 - 2.0
Contains a metal = ionic.
Non metals only = polar covalent.
