Lecture 4 Flashcards
What are some features of explosive breeding?
several days, males chorus, males struggle over females, dense aggregation
What are some features of prolonged breeding?
2-3 months, males call to attract females, males dont search, territorial, short amplexus
What is amplexus
mating position of frogs where male grasps female
what are the 3 mechanisms for internal fertilization
Copulatory organ, cloaca to cloaca, spermatophore
What are nupital pads?
aids with grips for males during amplexus
What is associated breeding
gonadal and hormonal events of males and females coincides
what is dissociated breeding?
gonadal and hormonal events dont coincide
What is continuous breeding
one sex continually sexually reproductive
What is parthenogenesis
females reproduce without males/sperm
What is hybridogenesis?
Half of parental genime is passed on while other half isnt
What is gynogenesis and kleptogenesis
unisexuals produce unreduced eggs, sperm DNA not incorporated into DNA of off spring (gynogenesis) or sperm is incorporated into embryo (kleptogenesis)
What is oviparity?
embryos develop in eggs that hatch outside body
What is ovoviviparity?
embryos develop in eggs that remains inside morher until they hatch, no placental attachment
What is viviparity?
devlopment of the embryo inside the mother eventually leading to live birth
