// lecture 37 Flashcards
What is IPCC?
- Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
- Established 1988 by UNEP and WMO.
- Task is to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis the scientific, technical and socioeconomic information relevant to understanding the:
(1) scientific basis of risk of human-induced
climate change,
(2) its potential impacts and
(3) options for adaptation and mitigation
What is AR5?
• Assessment Report 5 (2014)
- FAR (1990), SAR (1995), TAR (2001), AR4 (2007)
- Part I: The Physical Science Basis, Part II: Impacts, Adaptability and Vulnerability, Part III: Mitigation
How are the Scientists Chosen?
Scientists volunteer or agree to be recruited
• Governments nominate scientists
• Scientists may be contacted about particular assignments
• IPCC chooses what they need based on scientific coverage, national coverage, etc.
– this time 60% new to IPCC
What were my jobs?
Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) on Chapter 2: Observations of Atmosphere and Surface.
Global surface temperature change for the end of the 21st century is likely
to exceed 1.5°C relative to 1850 for all scenarios.
Global mean sea level will continue to
rise during the 21st century.
Limiting climate change will require
substantial and sustained reductions of greenhouse gas emissions.
