The virus evolves once inside the host, as it replicates with a degree of error.

How does reverse transcription cause lots of different genomic variations within an individual with HIV?
A
When the enzyme transcriptase turns viral RNA to DNA via reverse transcription to insert it into the human genome, errors can occur that persist as new viruses are released from the host cell.
