Lecture 35-38 Flashcards
Lipolysis is the process of cleaving the bond between a fatty acid and glycerol backbone from a triglyceride molecule. True or false?
True
Insulin increases phosphodiesterase activity in adipocytes. What effect does this have on lipolysis?
It will inhibit lipolysis. PDE breaks down cAMP which will activate PKA and PKA will activate hormone sensitive lipase which is the enzyme responsible for lipolysis.
What is the enzyme responsible for lipolysis?
hormone sensitive lipase
Tolbutamine and glyburide can inhibit carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 which leads to muscle weakness, pain, and exercise intolerance. Why do these drugs cause exercise intolerance?
They inhibit use of fats as a fuel source
Metformin decreases the activity of glucose-6-phosphatase. What effect will this have on the body?
It will inhibit gluconeogenesis in the liver & inhibit glycogenolysis in the liver.
Why do blood glucose levels not drop much overnight?
Glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver provides glucose to dump into the blood
