Lecture 34: Adaptation to Climate Change Flashcards
What are the main effects of climate change?
- increased temperature
- increased frequency of extreme weather (flooding, drought, wildfires, monsoons)
What is assisted migration?
Facilitating the migration of a species to a novel range through anthropocentric action
What are the issues with assisted migration?
- Northern communities have nowhere else to go
- High altitude communities cannot be moved to low altitude areas
- Causing invasions
T or F: assisted migration is the only way for species to move north.
False!
Some species are already naturally migrating north
What are the two strategies for selectively breeding wild species to adapt to increasing temperatures?
- convectional breeding
- genetic engineering
How does crispr work?
Modifying traits in offspring to ensure 100% that a specific trait will be passed on (rather than 50% chance)
T or F: species found in elevated regions of extreme climate cannot tolerate these extremes?
False!
Some individuals are lost in extreme weathering events but the population eventually recovers (except when the frequency increases so much so that the populations cannot recover)
T or F: certain aquatic plants can protect against extreme weathering?
True!
Some plants can protect shorelines from extreme wave events
What was the “rising of Chicago”?
Raising buildings and streets by regrading land to prevent flooding and water-born disease outbreaks.
