Lecture 32: Photosynthesis Flashcards
1
Q
Where do the light reactions take place?
What happens during the light reactions?
What are the products
A
Light reactions = thylakoid membrane
- the light absorbed by chlorophyll drives a transfer of electrons through the photosystems
- water is broken down and oxygen is released. The products are ATP and NADH are used at the calvin cycle
products = ATP and NADH
2
Q
Where do they dark reactions take place?
What happens during the dark reactions?
A
Dark reactions = Stroma
- process is independent of light - proceeds until the NADH and ATP produced by the light reactions are depleted
- process uses ATP and NADH to reduce CO2 to glucose
3
Q
How is light energy converted into chemical energy by plants
What is photosynthesis
A
Through the process of photosynthesis
= the process in which energy of sunlight is used by organisms to synthesise carbohydrates from carbons dioxide and water
= photosynthesis harvests the energy of the sun and converts it into chemical energy that can be used to fix atmosphere CO2 into carbohydrate
