Lecture 30 Flashcards
Are the fiber composition of muscles plastic?
Fiber composition of muscle is variable across individuals and only partly plastic.
Describe the difference between type 1 and type 2b muscle fiber
Type 1- Better for endurance (does not generate a lot of power)
Type 2- Specialized for tons of energy burst (fatigues rapidly)
What is muscle plasticity in response to chronic changes in behavior?
- Increase in mitochondria volume (more atp can be generated aerobically)
- Increase in lipid droplets (often used to power long distance endurance exercises)
- Increase in number of capillaries surrounding muscle fibers after endurance training
- left ventricle of the heart becomes stronger (increase in stroke volume)
What are the two enzymes that increase due to endurance training?
- TCA cycle enzymes
- ETC enzymes (electron transport chain)
What is the best treatment for someone with type two diabetes and why?
- exercising because it improves metabolic performance.
- increase in GLUT4 in plasma membranes which helps take up more glucose, so resting blood glucose decreases.
What is an example of a physiological regulatory event that caused muscle plasticity?
The muscular dogs have mutations (lack a gene that prevents synthesis of myostatin)
