Lecture 3: Tissue Basics - Structure and Histology Flashcards
Tissue
A group of similar cells working together to perform specific functions (cells + ECM)
Organ
two or more types of tissue working together to perform specific functions
Epithelial Tissue
- covers exposed surfaces
- lines internal passageways and chambers
- forms secretory glands
- control permeability
- provides sensation
- physical protection
- ALL attached to a basement membrane
Connective Tissue
- Fills internal space
- provides structural support and framework
- stores energy
- defend body from invading microorganisms
- transports fluids and dissolved materials
Muscle Tissue
- Contracts to produce movement
- Includes skeletal muscle, snd smooth muscle
Nervous Tissue
- Conducts electrical impulses
- carries information
Apical
Top of cell in contact with lumen
Basolateral
“bottom side” in contact with interstitial fluid (space in between cells with fluid)
Basement membrane
Attachment sites at bottom of cell
Leaky Tight Junction
allow paracellular transport of water and solutes (transport in between cells where tight junction is located)
‘Tight’ Tight Junction
Do not allow paracellular transport
Loose connective tissue
Lower density of extracellular fibres and more types of different cells
Dense Connective Tissue
Higher density of extracellular fibres and fewer types of different cells
Fixed Cells
Remain permanently in the tissue (fibroblast and fibrocytes)
Wandering Cells
can move into or through tissue depending on physiological demands (mesenchymal cells)
