What is disease?
What we have once we have been to the doctors and are on our way back home
What is illness?
A type of misfortune which brings on a subjective experience of physical and emotional changes which are generally confirmed by other people
What is contested diagnoses?
When you consider yourself ill but few agree you have a disease OR people think you have a disease but you consider yourself as one more variation of how to be normal
What is hierarchies of resort?
The way people follow through the levels of health card depending on the severity of illness. Professionals are neither the first nor last
What does the language of distress act as?
Acts as a bridge between the subjective experiences of impaired wellbeing and social acknowledgement of them (conveying it to others)
What is the language of distress determined by?
Physiological, psychological and social meanings

Culturally distinctive - different cultures convey distress differently
What is health care pluralism?
The fact that there is multiple sources of expertise/knowledge. 3 sectors are suggested (lay, folk and professional) with professional at the top of the iceberg and folk and lay beneath
