Lecture 3 Sterilisation, disinfection, filtration Flashcards
Define disinfection
Reduces the number of pathogens (but not spores) so they pose no threat of disease
Defined Sterilisation
A physical or chemical process that completely destroys or removes microbes, including spores
What is sterilisation used for?
Used for surgical instruments, syringes
What are some methods used for sterilisation?
heat, irradiation, filtration
What are disinfection used for?
Chemical agents used on inanimate (surfaces) or animate (living tissue)
what are some methods used for disinfection?
sodium hypochlorite, iodine, alcohols
what is the less resistant micro-organism?
Envelope viruses
Non-envelope viruses
Gram positive bacteria
What are the most resistant micro-organism?
Prions
Bacterial endospores
Mycobacterium
what are the types of physical control of micro-organism?
- Physcial (thermal) → Heat - dry or moist
- Physical (non-thermal) → Radiation — gamma ray, UV OR Filtrations
what are the types of Chemical control of micro-organism?
Gasses or liquids
What are the types of Physcial (thermal) control?
Dry heat using Hot air ovens and Incineration
Moist heat using boiling water, Pasteurisation of liquid, Tyndallisation, and Autoclaves
What are the types of Physcial (non-thermal) control?
Radiation
Filtration
What are the types of liquid used in chemical control?
Biguanides Chlorine Iodine Alcohols hydrogen peroxide Aldehydes
What are the types of gaseous used in chemical control?
Ethylene oxide (EO)
