Lecture 3 - Network Devices Flashcards
What is a node?
Anything connected to a network, usually a computer, but it could be a printer or a scanner.
What is a segment>
Any portion of a network that is seperated by a switch, bridge or a router from another part of a network.
What is a backbone?
The main cabling of a network that all of the segments connect to. Usually, the backbone is capable of carrying more information than the individual segments.
What is a topology?
The method used to physically connect nodes to the network.
What is a Collision Domain?
Part of a network where packet collisions occur.
What devices are placed within the physical layer within the OSI model?
NIC, hub, repeater and modem.
What devices are placed within the data link layer within the OSI model?
NIC, switch and bridge.
What devices are placed within the Network layer within the OSI model?
Router
What is the function of a Network Interface Card (NIC)
Provides physical connection between a device and a communication medium.
What is the function of a repeater?
Allows extension of a network by amplifying and retransmitting the network bit-stream.
What is the function of a hub?
Acts as a multi-port repeater. Still forwards everything it recieves. Electrically isolates different connected segments so that a fault on one cable segment may not affect adjacent segments.
What is the function of a bridge?
Connects two LANs together. A bridge processes frames and makes traffic-forwarding decisions based on MAC addresses within data frames. Helps with problems caused by collsion domains.
What is the function of a switch?
Acts as a multi-port simple bridge, connecting multiple of the same type.
What is a collison domain?
If any two hosts within a network segment attempt to send a frame at the same time then a collision occurs and the data is corrupted. The area containing all the hosts affected by the collision is called a collision domain.
What is the function of a router?
Routers connect different networks.
