Lecture 3 - Matter Flashcards
what is matter?
anything that has mass and takes up space
what are physical properties?
properties that can be observed to determine their changes
what are chemical properties?
determines how substances change to other substances
what are pure substances?
substances that cannot be broken down or simplified
what are mixtures?
combinations of several components that can be separated through physical processes
what are properties of solids?
defined volume and shape. particles are trapped in place and vibrate together
what is a crystalline solid?
a solid with a regularly repeating pattern of molecules. crystals break straight (between the pattern = fault line)
what is an amorphous solid?
a solid with no regularly repeating pattern of molecules. they break in a webbed pattern
what are properties of liquids?
defined volume but no defined shape. molecules are not restrained to one place
what are properties of gases?
no defined volume or shape. molecules are free to move and are spread far apart. gases expand and shrink to fit the container they are placed in.
what are the two forms of pure substances?
elements and compounds
what is a homogeneous mixture?
a mixture with uniform appearance and properties, no visible pieces
what is a heterogeneous mixture?
a mixture with distinct phases/components
