What kind of lice fall under the suborder Anoplura?
Sucking lice
What kind of lice fall under the suborder Mallophaga?
Biting lice
Which suborder of lice is found parasitising birds?
Mallophaga
You see an obvious louse egg in the hair of a horse. Which suborder is this most likely to be from?
Anoplura
What are the two types of Anoplura of the sheep?
Linognathus ovillus Lonognathus pedalis
How many Mallophaga of the sheep are there? Name them/it.
One - Bovicola ovis.
How many Anoplura of the cow are there? Name them/it.
Three - Linognathus vituli Haematopinus spp. Solenopotes capillatus
What subclass is Bovicola bovis? What species does it parasitise?
Mallophaga - cow.
Name the Anoplura of the horse.
Haematopinus asini
Name the Mallophaga of the horse.
Werneckiella equi
What suborder is Linognathus setosus? What species does it parasitise?
Anoplura. Dog.
Name the two species of Mallophaga that parasitise the dog.
Trichodectes canis Heterodoxus spiniger
Name the species of Anoplura that parasitise the cat.
None ;)
Name the species of Mallophaga that parasitise the cat.
Felicola subrostratus
Name three lice that parasitise poultry. What subclass do they all belong to?
Menacanthus stramineus Lipeurus caponis Goniocotes gallinae All mallophaga
You find this louse close to the epidermis on the body of a sheep. What suborder is it, and what species is it most likely to be?

Bovicola ovis. It is Mallophaga - biting.
You pull this louse from the facial area of a sheep. What suborder and species is it most likely to be?

Linognathus ovillus - Anoplura (sucking)
You pull this louse from the leg area of a sheep. What suborder and species is it most likely to be? What chemical treatment do you recommend to the farmer? Do you have any other recommendations?

Linognathus pedalis - Anoplura. Recommend either a topical or oral control as it is a sucking louse. Farmer should also rotate sheep for at least 18 days (maybe 3 weeks to be safe) because it can survive in the pasture.
Which species life cycle is this?

Bovicola ovis
What pulled wool score would you give this guy?

3
You pull this louse from the tail hairs of a horse. There are visible eggs in the mane and tail of the horse. Which suborder and species is it most likely to be? Do you have any recommendations other than medications to help the owner eradicate it?

Anoplura - Haematopinus asini. They should also treat their riding and grooming gear as it can survive on these.
You pull this louse from the ventral area of a horse. What suborder and species is it most likely to be? How is it transmitted from horse to horse? Other than irritation, does it pose any additional threats to the horse?

Mallophaga - Werneckiella equi - transmitted by contact. Can be a vector for equine infectious anaemia.
You pull this louse from the head area of a cow. It is fairly obvious among the fur. What suborder and species is it most likely to be?

Anoplura - Haematopinus eurysternus
You pull this louse from the neck area of a cow. It is fairly obvious in the fur. What suborder and species is it most likely to be?

Anoplura - Solenopotes capillatus
You pull this louse from the tail of a cow. What suborder and species is it most likely to be?

Anoplura - Linognathus vituli
After much searching, you pull this louse from the body of a cow, on the ventral axillary area. What suborder and species is it most likely to be? Would oral ivermectin take care of this?

Mallophaga - Bovicola bovis. No - needs topical control as is a biting louse.
You find these lice on a pig. The pig is covered in red spots. What species is this, and what potential sequelae of this infestation concern you?

Anoplura - Haematopinus suis. Vector for pox and swine fever.
You find this louse lurking in the coarse tail fur of a dog. It was not difficult to find. The suborder and species of this louse is most likely:

Anoplura - Linognathus setosus
This louse is found on the ventral aspect of a dog. Considering the morphological features, what suborder and species is it most likely to be?

Trichodectes canis - mallophaga
This louse is found on the ventral aspect of a dog. Considering the morphological features, what suborder and species is it most likely to be?

Mallophaga - Heterodexus spiniger
You find this louse on a 3 year old feline patient. What suborder and species is it? Is it a good idea to send the cat home with some oral selamectin or ivermectin?

Mallophaga - Felicola subrostratus. This is an indication that there is a more serious underlying issue with this cat. Further investigation into this e.g bloodwork is warranted. Furthermore, as it is a biting louse, will need topical treatment - oral will not be effective.
What is the most common louse of poultry? Is it the organism in the image?

Menacanthus stramineus
Nope, this is Goniocotes gallinae
You find this organism in the scraggly plumage of a chicken. What is it, how can you morphologically differentiate between it and M. stramineus, and what kind of control do you recommend for the farmer?

This is Lipeurus caponis. It has a longer abdomen than Menacanthus stramineus (pictured). Farmer should put ivermectin, selamectin or fipronil product in dust bath or aerosol for his chickens.
