Lecture 3 Hearing impairments Flashcards
What are causal factors of hearing impairments across the ages?
Prenatal: genetics, intra-uterine infections.
Perinatal: lack of oxygen, prematurity, low birth weight
Childhood/adolescence: chronic otitis media, infections
Adulthood and older age in general.
What are lifestyle factors that can cause hearing impairments?
Smoking, NCDs, diabetes, hypertension, noise, infections, ototoxic drugs and chemicals.
What are forms of primary prevention of hearing loss in the Netherlands?
Prenatal care. Protection against noise and ototoxic chemicals at work. Recreational noise exposure reduction by protection.
What are forms of secondary prevention of hearing loss in the Netherlands?
Neonatal screening, screening at primary schools, self-screening of adults.
What is the impact of hearing loss in adults related to social participation?
Loneliness, depression, distress, cognitive impairments, and stigma/shame.
What is the impact of hearing loss in adults related to work?
Problems with finding or keeping work, lower income, fatigue, sick leaves.
What is the impact of hearing loss in adults related physical health?
Falls.
What are ways of rehabilitation of hearing loss?
Hearing aid/cochlear implant, communication strategies, vocational rehabilitation, lip reading, sign language, speech to text apps.
What is a clustered randomized trial
An RCT, but not the participants are randomized, but practicies/hospitals etc, of which they use the patients.
What is the relevance of applying behaviour change models when designing or implementing interventions?
To make an evidence based intervention that is focused on the wanted behaviour, so you try to change something in a way that it works. It makes the intervention more relevant to the population.
What is the reason for low use and satisfaction of hearing aids?
- Limited gain in noisy situations
- Remaining activity limitations and participation restrictions
- Low overall sound quality
- Low wearing comfort
- Need for regular hearing aid care and maintenance
- Problems with handling the (small) hearing aids
- Limited acceptance
- Lack of social support
- Communication strategies are needed to optimise the beneficial effects of hearing aids

SURP (online communication programs) positive effects
- Has a positive effect on self- efficacy of hearing aid handling, use and satisfaction
- Psychosocial factors, communication and coping strategies
