Lecture 3 Gluteal Region Flashcards
where is lumbar puncture carried out and why
between L3 and L4 because the spinal chord ends at L1 in the adult
what boney landmark signifies L4
the suprecristal plane- the top of the iliac crests
what are the three gluteal muscles
minimus maximus and medius
Maximus insertion and attachment
sacrum and medial iliac crest to gluteal tuberosity and iliotibial tract
minimus attachment and insertion
between the anterior and inferior lines on the ilium to the anterior greater trochanter.
medius attachment and insertion
posterior ilium line to the medial greater trochanter
why must you not inject into gluteus maximus
because the sciatic nerve runs underneath it and it could cause nerve damage. instead inject into medius in the upper quadrant of the buttock
functions of the gluteal muscles
medius and minimus- abductors
maximus- extensor
minimus- internal rotator
what effect does a weak medius have
tilts pelvis- sound side sags
how do we clinically check for a tilted pelvis
place thumbs on the anterior iliac spins - supracristal lines should be parrallel to floor
hyper-pronated foot and volgy effect on knee can be signs of what
internal rotation of femur and weakness of minimus
if theres a acetabulum fracture what line will be disrupted in and X-ray
iliopectineal
describe the root of the internal pudendal and the tissue is supplies
it comes from the internal iliac artery. it exits the greater sciatic foramen and enters through the lesser sciatic foramen. Supplies external genitalia
what blood vessel is embolized as a treatment for prostate hyperplasia.
the inferior vesical artery.
what organ is located under the obturator internus and can cause pain when internally rotating femur
the appendix
