Lecture 3: Bones, Bone Formation and Features Flashcards
what bones are considered axial?
skull, vertebrae, costal bones, sternum complex and hyoid bone
what bones are considered appendicular?
clavicles, scapulae, pelvic bones and upper+lower extremity bones
what are the 6 bone classifications?
long, short, flat, irregular, sesamoid and sutural
describe the epiphysis
expanded end of long bones that is covered in hyaline cartilage
describe the metaphysis
sits between the epiphysis and diaphysis and is the active growth zone in young bones
describe the diaphysis
tubular main shaft made of thick compact bone exterior with a thin trabecular and medullary cavity interior
what are the layers of a short bone from exterior to interior?
periosteum sheets > compact bone > trabecular bone + endosteum > marrow
name the three bony projections from smallest to largest
tubercle, tuberosity and trachanter
name the three bony lines from smallest to largest
line, ridge and crest
define the bony feature ‘spine’
sharp, slender projection of bone to allow for muscle and ligament attachment
define the bony feature ‘condyle’
an articular prominence of a bone
define the bony feature ‘epicondyle’
prominence above the condyle that attaches connective tissue to bone
define the term ‘fossa’
a shallow depression in bone
define the term ‘foramen’
an opening/hole in bone
define the term ‘notch’
an indentation on the edge of a bone
