Lecture 3 Flashcards
How many electrons do cytochromes carry?
One electron
How many electrons do FeS proteins carry?
One electron
How many electrons does CoQ carry?
1 or 2 electrons/protons
How many electrons do FMN and FAD carry?
One or two electrons/protons
What are the layers of the mitochondria in order from outside to inside?
Outer membrane
IMS
Inner membrane
Matrix
Where are the complexes located in the mitochondria?
Inner membrane
How do we determine the order of the complexes of the electron transport chain?
- Order the reduction potentials from most negative to most positive
- Add inhibitors/run spectrophotometry
- Deprive of O2, then add back in, measure rate of electron flow through each complex
What are the 3 enzymes that attenuate ROS?
Superoxide dismutase
Glutathione peroxidase
Glutathione reductase
What does superoxide dismutase do?
It reduces the superoxide radical to hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen
What does glutathione peroxidase do?
It converts hydrogen peroxide into water
What does glutathione reductase do?
It recycles glutathione peroxidase back to its reduced form
