Lecture 3 Flashcards
What are the types of bias
- Recall bias
- Confirmation bias
- Outcome bias
- Survivorship bias
What is recall bias
You see more of what you see
Creates a FALSE SENSE OF PREVALENCE
Jocye’s words: “you will diagnose the same condition the more you see it”
What is confirmation bias
Perform the test/measure and diagnose it but wont CONTRADICT yourself
What is outcome bias (post-hoc)
Attribute improvements in your patients to your intervention
- focus only on your SUCCESS
Joyce words; “due to your interventions, you were RIGHT about your diagnosis”
What is survivorship bias
You will make decisions based off past SUCCESSES and IGNORE your past failures
Joyce words; “you will only remember all the times you were successful and you will continue the same treatment
What is a null/statistical hypothesis
Always predicts NO DIFFERENCE
What is a research question
Similar to PICO but its purpose is to test a hypothesis
What is a hypothesis
Tentative prediction about the nature of the relationship btw 2 or more variables in a research population
Example of RQ and RH
RQ: what is the effect of isometric exercises on knee pain in patient
RH: isometric exercises will decrease pain more than isokinetic exercises
Why would you REJECT THE NULL
If there is a significant difference
Why do we do 2 hypotheses
Disprove an idea to generate new knowledge
Test the difference
Conclude what the difference is
However has limitations, you never prove your alternative hypothesis
