lecture 3 Flashcards
what is CRF
the ability to perform large muscle, dynamic, moderate to vigorous intensity exercise for prolonged periods of time
gold standard for measuring CRF
max volume of O2 consumed per unit time = VO2 max
-measured in ml/kg/min (relative) or L/min (absolute)
how do you calculate HR max for healthy men and women
HR max= 208 - (0.7 x age)
how do you calculate HRmax for men and women in adult fitness programs with broad range of age and fitness levels
HRmax= 207 - (0.7 x age)
maximal exercise test
exercising until you hit volitional fatigue
submaximal exercise test
client exercises to 85% or less of max HR
how do we decide whether to use maximal or submaximal
-reasons for test
-risk level of client
-availability of appropriate equipment and personnel
-appropriateness of working some individuals to point of volitional fatigue
assumptions we make when estimating VO2max
-steady state HR
-HR and work rate are a linear relationship
-predicted max HR is accurate
-mechanical efficiencies same for everyone
-not on meds that alter HR response to exercise
-not using high quantities of caffeine or in high temp environment
whats a field test
measuring post exercise HR
-running, walking, stepping, cycling, swimming
examples of a field test
6 min walk test
1.5 mile walk/run test
20m beep test
if patient is taking beta blockers, whats the formula for HRmax
HRmax= 164 - (0.7xage)
bruce protocol treadmill tests
3 min stages, increasing speed and grade each time
