lec 5 Flashcards
whats body composition
component tissues of body
-water, protein, minerals, fat
two component model of body composition
fat free body component and fat body component
fat free mass
the mass of the fat free tissues of the body
-lean body mass
percent body fat
the percentage of total body mass thats fat
what chronic conditions is excess body fat associated with
hypertension
metabolic syndrome
type II diatetes
mellitus
stroke
CVD
dyslipidemia
direct vs indirect methods of assessing body composition
direct: dissect and chemically analyze tissues
indirect: densitometry, anthropometric, other
densitometry
-hydrodensitometry weighing
-plethysmography
anthropometric methods
-height, weight, BMI, circumferences, skin fold
other body composition assessment methods
dual energy x ray absorptiometry
total body electrical conductivity
bioelectrical impedance analysis
what is considered to be overweight
above recommended weight range but not in obese category
25-29.9 kg/m2
what is considered to be obese
-excess fat tissue
-no uniform standards for % body fat
>30kg/m2
18.5-24.9kg/m2
how should body weight be measured
-using calibrated balance beam or electronic scale w client wearing minimal clothing and having empty pockets
-shoes removed prior to stadiometer for height measurement
what is waist to hip ratio
circumference of waist divided by circumference of hips and has traditionally been used as a simple method for assessing body fat distribution and identifying individuals w higher and more detrimental amounts of abdominal fat
