What are signs of aggression/stress in the horse?
-ears pinned back
-Flehmen response
What are the basics of handling/restraint?
-lead on left
-make use of stocks, cross ties, and quick release knots
-can use chain lead ropes, neck twitch, self-retaining twitch, or rope twitch
How should a physical of a horse be worked?
head to tail, typically starting on left side
What should be examined on the head?
-facial symmetry
-nasal passages
-mucous membranes
-eyes
-submandibular lymph nodes
-ears
Where can a horse’s pulse be felt?
facial artery under jaw
What should be examined in the neck?
-throat latch area: symmetry, parotid salivary glands, thyroid
-jugular vein
-neck muscles/symmetry
What should be examined in the thorax?
-palpate ribs and spaces
-heart: 2-4 sounds
-lung sounds often very quiet
What should be examined in the abdomen?
-symmetry and distention
-listen to gut, esp. cecum in upper right quad.
-manure consistency
What should be examined on the limbs?
-palpation to identify heat/swelling/thickening
-digital pulses: strong pulse indicates inflammation
What are the parts of the hoof?
-heel
-frog
-hoof wall
-sole
-coronary band (at top of hoof)
Where are the IM injection sites?
-neck/splenius muscle
-semimembranosus/semitendinosus
-pectoral muscle (reactive)
Where are IV injections/blood draws done?
upper third of jug. vein
What are the basic gaits of the horse?
-walk: 4 beats
-trot: 2 beats
-canter: 3 beats
