lecture 29- ecosystem services Flashcards

1
Q

What are ecosystem services?

A

Outputs, conditions, processes of natural systems that either directly or indirectly benefit humans
- Benefits can be essential or simply helpful
- Benefits can be material or social

Involve aspects of hydrology, biogeochemistry, ecology, and economics

Q

Explain the following regulating service: extreme events

A

Reduce damage from floods, hurricanes, droughts, etc

Example: mangroves

Q

Explain the following regulating service: air purification

A

Plants purify air through several different mechanisms:
- CO2 removal through photosynthesis
- Removal of particulate matter
- Nitrogen fixation in leaves → mediated by symbiotic bacteria

Q

Explain the following regulating service: water purification

A

Specific components of aquatic communities are excellent at
removing and purifying elements of water contamination

Q

What are examples of organisms that purify water?

A

1- Wetlands: Natural removal of excess nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural fertilizer runoff and uptake of certain heavy metals from soils.

2- Constructed wetlands: Artificial wetlands designed to maximize the water filtration potential of a wetland ecosystem.

3- Mussels (and other bivalves): Filter feeders, will concentrate pollutants as they consume phytoplankton

Q

Explain the following regulating service: erosion prevention

A

Maintaining the soil fertility of a system. It takes a long time to develop new soils, so this is vital.

Q

Explain the following regulating service: decomposers

A

1- Role in the carbon cycle + supporting heterotrophs and photosynthesizers

2- Release of minerals and elements into the environment for further use by life

3- Suppress disease transmission in communities

Q

Explain the following regulating service: Pollinators

A

Insects and vertebrates transport pollen from the male to female flowers of plant species

Estimated 35% of crops directly dependent on pollination for production of the harvestable product

Q

What are cultural services?

A

Include non-material benefits that people obtain from ecosystems such as spiritual enrichment, intellectual development, recreation, and aesthetic values

15
Q

What are supporting services?

A

Ecosystem services that are internal to ecosystems, maintaining ecosystem integrity, functioning, and resilience and the capacity of ecosystems to produce provisioning, regulatory, and cultural services.

16
Q

What are examples of supporting services?

A

Photosynthesis
Nutrient cycling
Water cycle
Soil formation
Genetic resources
Habitat

17
Q

What kind of service are genetic resources?

A

supporting services

18
Q

What is allelic diversity?

A

The variety of alleles between and within populations of species

19
Q

Why is genetic diversity important for climate change?

A

Genetic adaptations by mutations within an isolated sub-population may be useful for adapting to climate change.

It is good to have significant genetic differences within a population.

20
Q

How do we economically value ecosystem services?

A

Someone’s WTP for a service or WTA to be without the service.

21
Q

What is the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB)?

A

A study attempting to quantify economic valuation of global biodiversity (2007-2011).
