Lecture 2.5: Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
The autonomic nervous system controls the
body functions that we have little awareness of and no conscious control over. (Includes respiration, heart rate, blood pressure)
Where is the integrated center of the autonomic nervous system?
What happens after, the process?
Hypothalamus
- The motor neuron carries information from the hypothalamus to the autonomic centers
From autonomic centers, series of motor neurons carry information to visceral effector.
What are the two autonomic neurons?
1 Preganglionic neuron
- Postganglionic neuron
Preganglionic neuron
- cell bodies lie in the brain stem and spinal cord
-part of visceral reflex arcs - Leaves the CNS and synapse with postganglionic neurons at the autonomic ganglia
Postganglionic neuron
- cell bodies are in the peripheral autonomic ganglia
- innervates visceral effectors (cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, glands, adipose tissue.)
What are the two major divisions of the autonomic nervous system.
- Sympathetic
- Parasympathetic
Both divisions influence a third autonomic division called the
Enteric nervous system
Sympathetic Division
- Activates during periods of external stress or emergency (fight or flight)
- also called thoracolumbar
Sympathetic division process
- Axons emerge from cell bodies within lateral gray horns of thoracic and superior lumbar segments of the spinal cord (T1-L2)
- Axons innervate at the autonomic ganglia relatively close to the spinal cord.
Parasympathetic Division
- Resting conditions (rest and repose)
Responsible for sexual arousal and erection - Also called the craniosacral division
Parasympathetic process
- Axons emerge from brain stem nuclei and lateral gray horns of sacral segments of the spinal cord.
- Axons innervate autonomic ganglia very close to (or within) target organ
Enteric Division
- Extensive network of neurons and nerve networks located in walls of the digestive tract.
What neurotransmitter does the sympathetic nervous system use?
epinephrine / norepinephrine
which type of receptors are in the synaptic nervous system? Which two are they?
Adrenergic receptors.
Alpha receptors (smooth muscle)
Beta receptors (cardiac and smooth muscle)
What neurotransmitter does the parasympathetic nervous system use?
Acetylcholine
