What is Carly’s story?
•”Ichthyosis is a rare genetic or acquired skin condition affecting an
estimated 10‐20 individuals per Million.
•Ichthyosis is characterised by persistently dry, thickened, rough, fish scale skin. There are at least 20 varieties of ichthyosis, including inherited and acquired forms.
•People with ichthyosis have normal lifespan. However those with very severe ichthyosis may need to spend several hours each day caring for their skin so they can lead as much of a normal life as possible.”
What are the issues faced by people with disability?
-Physical difference “gives non-disabled people the right to invade our privacy and make judgments about our lives”.
Some of the assumptions and prejudices that society makes about those with disabilities and physical differences that apply most to me include “That we crave to be normal and whole”, “that we are naïve and lead sheltered lives”, “that we constantly suffer and that any suffering is nasty”, that we can’t ever really accept our condition, and if we appear to be leading a full and contented life, or are simply cheerful, we are ‘just putting a good face on it’’, and “that if we are particularly gifted, successful or attractive…our fate is infinitely more tragic than if we were none of these things”
What is Carly’s blog?
•A blog is a diary on the Internet.
•I’ve been blogging on and off since 2001. My latest blog has been going since
December 2009.
•I wanted to be in control telling my story. I didn’t want the sensationalism
and exploitation in the way mass media covers conditions like mine. •Blogging has created many professional networks and friendships. I regularly
spend time with my blogging friends in real life.
•My blog had led to freelance writing. Many publications allow me to keep
my own voice and unedited story.
•Other opportunities – speeches, TV presenting, radio interviews.
•Awards: Winner of Yooralla Media Award for Best Online Commentary 2013
and 2010, Winner of best personal blog for Voices of 2013, winner of BUPA Health Activism award 2013, Finalist in Best Australian Blogs 2011, recipient of Australia Day Public Service Medal in 2011, recipient of Layne Beachley Aim for the Stars grant 2012.
What’s Master’s thesis of Carly?
• A blog gives people a voice. People with disabilities and chronic illnesses often don’t have a voice, or feel as though they belong to a community, but blogging affords them both. I read a wide range of blogs including ones focusing on chronic illness and disability. Many bloggers write that they feel isolated because of their illness or disability and some say their blog is means of social interaction, or a way to create awareness about illness and disability. Through documenting my story of living with ichthyosis on my blog, I have given much thought to what it feels like to live with a chronic illness and have a confrontingly different appearance.
Why does carly tell her story?
- Empowerment
- Because of the connotations around disability and visible difference, I never thought I’d get a chance in the media.
- I credit Mia Freedman for giving me that chance.
- I never know who’s reading. I may be helping a new mum or an at risk youth, or be asked to speak at a school or a university in England.
- Forming a sense of community
- Using the internet to create positive change
- Education
- Giving hope to new parents and young people with Ichthyosis.
How did she become a teacher from a patient?
- I have been a lifelong patient of Melbourne Health – first at the Royal Children’s Hospital, now at the Royal Melbourne.
- I have shown an active interest in my healthcare – both in the consult room and online, and this has led to speaking opportunities to geneticists and dermatologists, and now you.
- The Royal Melbourne Hospital supported my overseas trip to speak at the Centre for Appearance Research (UWE) – I was the first academic patient they sponsored.
