lecture 20 Flashcards
is Language left or right hemisphere dominant
Left hemisphere dominant
what are the 2 parts of a full language
- Semantics (symbols, meaning):
Open class words (nouns and verbs) - Syntax (structure):
Closed class words (prepositions and conjunctions)
what is the nature view for the development of language?
Language is inherently set up in the brain when born (Chomsky)
what is the nurture view for the development of language?
You have to get experience and input language to develop language (Bates)
what are the 2 ways to study lateralization? (two hemispheres specialize for different things)
- People with lesions in one hemisphere
- Isolate activity in one hemisphere (split brain patients)
what is brocas aphasia and where is it located?
- Located in frontal lobe
- Mainly, problems in language production
- Some problems in comprehension of complicated sentences
- trouble with “closed class” words
(prepositions and conjunctions), involved in SYNTAX
(example: by, like)
what is Wernicke’s aphasia and where is it located?
- located in temporal lobe
- Trouble with comprehension
- Can produce fluent/fluid speech, but often
non-sensible and/or the grammar is incorrect.
what Aspect of Language Are Right Hemisphere-Dominated?
production and comprehension of prosody
Visual Motion Processing in DEAF vs. HEARING subjects
- In hearing people, visual motion detection better in LVF (RH)
- In deaf signers, visual motion detection better in RVF (LH)
If language is (mainly) LH, how can we talk about things that are presented in the LVF
and “experienced” by the RH?
Connections between hemispheres allow sensory information received by the RH to be sent to the LH (so you can talk about it)
- corpus callosum (massive) is the connection
- anterior commissure (connects parts of frontal cortex)
- hippocampal commissure (connects hippocampi)
which hemisphere is specialized for local visual processing
left hemisphere
which hemisphere is specialized for global visual processing
right hemisphere
whats the right hemisphere involved in?
1) Holistic processing
- global processing
2) Motion detection
3) Emotions
4) Creativity (and Musicality)
5) Insight
