Lecture 2: Values Flashcards
Values
General disposition, not attitude towards specific objects
value measure:
indirect
i.e. decision scenario where different options represent different values
values measure:
self-report
i.e. how important is .. as a life-guiding principle?
Motivation
- specific end state/goal to be approached/avoided
- motive: power, intimacy.., can be source of goal
goals measure:
indirect
approach/avoidance: push/pull joystick
reponse time task: goal-related stimuli
persistence: time spent on difficult task
picking up task after interruption
goals measure:
self-report
ask whether people have a certain goal
motive measure:
explicit
questionnaire, often specific for one motive: achievement, power…
Implicit Motives
nonconscious motivational needs that orient, select and energize behaviour:
projective measures (i.e. pic. story exercise)
Mixed-Methods studies
- Validity important!
stimulus sampling
use multiple stimuli within a category to avoid specific (confounding) characteristics: male vs female, but female is just more friendly than male…
