Lecture 2: Attitudes Flashcards
Types of Attitude Measures
Explicit, direct, self-report, indirect, implicit (countering social desirability)
example: direct vs indirect
“do you like old people?” vs how far they sit from old person
Implicit/indirect:
Affect Misattribution Procedure (AMP)
i.e. chinese characters following positive/negative stimulus
Implicit/indirect:
Affective Priming Task
response facilitation by priming associated words/concepts
Implicit/indirect:
Implicit Association Test (IAT)
idea is that making a response is easier when associated concepts share the same key
Implicit/indirect:
Go/No Go Association Test (GNAT)
capacity not to respond; tests impulsivity
Controllability: risk of social desirability?
not when participant is naïve; risk for IAT and AMP when aware/informed
attitude objects for:
1. self-report
2. implicit
- anything
- simple if represented by word/picture
Stability of individual differences on implicit vs explicit
Implicit less stable over time! relies on triggered associations; explicit dissonance can be resolved, thus stable
