Lecture 2: The cerebral cortex Flashcards
What is the difference between the allocortex, archicortex and neocortex?
Review these definitions…
Allocortex: All cell types are the same in grey matter, but, completely disorganised.
Archicortext: Simple structure - Regions of cell entry and exit. i.e hippocampus
Neocortex: Grey matter cortex with high structure
What are the three major types of cerebreal cortex?
Agranular
Homotypical
Granular (Koniocortex)
Describe the predominate cell types in agranular cerebral cortex and an example:
Agranular: Pyramidal cells predominate across layers 3,5,6
i.e Precentral gyrus, Primary motor cortex
Describe a homotypical cerebral cortex and an example..
Layer 1: Molecular . dura mater
Layer 2: Ext. Granular
Layer 3: Ext. Pyramidal
Layer 4: Int. Granular
Layer 5: Int. Pyramidal
Layer 6: Multiform
I.e Prefrontal cortex, Parietal cortex, Temporal cortex
What is granular (Koniocortex) and some examples?
Koniocortex: Granule cells predominate (layers 2 and 4)
i.e Primary sensory/visual/auditory cortex,
In the brain blood supply, where is the common site of aneurysm?
The junction between the internal carotid and the post. communicating art.
What does the ant. and post. cerebral arteries from?
Circle of willis. but ~30% have fully patent circle. Facilitates shunting of blood.
What does the post. communicating art. represent?
The junction between ant. and post. circulation.
What supplies the lateral aspects of the brain?
Middle cerebral artery
What do the basilar arteries sit infront of?
The pons
What are granule cells in the neocortex?
Small round neuron cell bodies that are local interneurons and recieve a lot of input from sensory systems.
