Lecture 2: Pulmonary A&P Flashcards
What is anatomical dead space?
The area superior to the terminal bronchioles (where no gas exchange occurs)
What is phonation?
The diaphragm eccentrically contracting during speech.
What happens to the bronchioles when they become less than 1 mm in diameter?
There is no longer cartilage
What are alveoli septa?
String the outside of the adjacent alveoli to the next (helps keep them inflated)
What are the pores of Kohn?
Openings between two alveoli (allowing air to go from one alveolus to the next)
What are the limits of the visceral pleura?
6th intercostal space midclavicular line
8th intercostal space midaxillary line
T10 Vertebral level mid scapular line
What are the limits of the parietal pleura?
8th intercostal space midclavicular
10th intercostal space midaxillary
T12 mid scapular
What are the two structures that make up the respiratory generator? Pons!
Prebotzinger complex
Retrotrapezoid nucleus
Where is the respiratory pattern generator?
Medulla
What is a physiological shunt?
Perfusion but not ventilation (0)
Physiological dead space, what is it?
Ventilation but no perfusion (infinite)
What is the equation for compliance?
Compliance= change in ventilation/change in pressure (choose vagina over penis)
