Lecture 2: Process Identification Flashcards
Anatomy of a Business Process Model
-You simplify a real world system by turning it into an object system
-in order to present/illustrate it you turn it into a model system
-model system is turned into a subject through analysis
-subject leads to actionable effect on real world system

Categories of Business Processes
Core processes: Essential value creation of the organization –what is offered to end customers or users?
Support processes: Enabling core processes – what is needed inorder to create value?
Management Processes: direction, rules, and planning – howshould our processes function?
3 Types of Relationships between Processes
Sequence: Describes a logical sequence between twoprocesses
Decomposition: One process describes in greater detail somepart of another process
Specialization: One process is an adapted instance of anoverarching category of business processes
Process Architecture with 3 Levels
Process Landscape <=> Abstract Process Models <=> Detailed Process Models (e.g. BPMN)
Process Selection Criteria
Strategic Importance: Which process has the greatestimpact on the strategic goals of the organization? I.e. procurement for costefficiency strategy and R&D and marketing related processes fordifferentiation
Health: Which processes are in the deepest trouble?Determine which processes could relatively benefit the most from BPM initiatives
Feasibility: How susceptible is the process to BPMinitiatives (either incidental or continuous)? Culture and organizationalpolitics might present barriers to achieving benefits through BPM
Process Performance Measures
· Time
· Cost/productivity
· Quality
· Flexibility
UML XOR + AND
- Division =AND
- Afterdivision, synchronization (can beimplicit)
- Branching =XOR
- Afterbranching, merging (needs to beexplicit)
Explicit vs implicit
