Lecture 2 - PNS, CNS + Neurons Flashcards
Define neuroanatomy
Structure and connectivity of the nervous system
What is neurophysiology?
How neurons work and communicate
What are the two parts of the CNS and what do they do?
Brain: receives and processes information, initiates responses, stores memories
Spinal cord: conducts signals to and from the brain, controls reflex activities.
What are the two parts of the PNS and what do they do?
Autonomic Nervous system (ANS): controls involuntary responses
Somatic Nervous System (SNS): controls voluntary movements.
What is the ANS made up of?
Sympathetic nervous system - fight or flight
Parasympathetic nervous system - rest and digest
Outline role of the Somatic nervous system
Consists of nerves responsible for:
- Transmitting signals from the CNS to the body for voluntary movement.
- Delivering sensory information from the body to the CNS.
Outline the role of the autonomic nervous system
Consists of nerves responsible for
- Regulating the automatic behaviours of the body (e.g. heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, digestion.)
What are the 3 parts of the brain?
Forebrain
Midbrain
Hindbrain
What is the forebrain made up of?
Limbic system
Thalamus
Basal Ganglia
Hypothalamus
What is the role of the hindbrain in the medulla?
Responsible for regulating:
- heart rate
- circulation
- respiration
- sleep/wakefulness
- level of arousal/consciousness
