Computer network
A set of computers/devices connected together, which transfer data using a common set of communication protocols
Local Area Network (LAN)
Connects two or more devices within a geographic region, usually within the same building. A physical connection is required
Name the 3 types of cable media
Twisted pair, coaxial, and fiber optic cables
Which of the 3 types of cable media is least secure?
Twisted pair cables
Which of the 3 types of cable media is most secure?
Fiber optic cables
Transfer protocols
Used for the transfer of files over a TCP-based (transmission control protocol) network like the Internet
MAC/URL addresses
Unique addresses given to each device on a network used to identify and locate it
Wireless networks (WLAN)
Eliminates the need for wired transmission but comes with less bandwidth
What are the 4 network topologies?
Star, BUS, ring, MESH
Cons of BUS and ring topology
If a connection at one point is severed, everything after that point will also be cut off
Pros of star topology
You can remove devices from the network without detriment
The Internet
Many computers connected together through wires/cables
What is needed to form a computer network?
- Devices to be connected together
- Some way to connect them (wires/cables, WiFi)
- A transfer protocol or language
- Addresses for the devices
World Wide Web (www)
A system or convention for exchanging information over the internet
The Cloud
A network of computers located somewhere else which you can access remotely, allowing you to store data/files, run software, play video games, etc
