Lecture 2 - Laryngeal Structure + Function Flashcards
What muscles are responsible for controlling vocal fold length, tension, and position within the larynx?
Intrinsic laryngeal muscles
what are the 4 actions the intrinsic laryngeal muscles can be divided into?
- open the glottis by adducting the vocal folds.
- closing the glottis by adducting the vocal folds
- Lengthen the vocal folds
- shorten the vocal folds
What does the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle do?
opens the glottis
abducts the vocal folds
What does the lateral cricoarytenoid muscle do?
closes the glottis
adducts the membraneous portion of the vocal folds
What does the interarytenoid muscle do?
closes the glottis
adducts the cartilaginous portion of the vocal folds
What does the cricothyroid muscle do?
lengthens the vocal folds
decrease space between the thyroid/cricoid cartilages
what does the thyroarytenoid muscle do?
shorten the vocal folds
what are the two parts of the thyroarytenoid muscle and what do they do?
thyrovocalis: tenses vocal folds, increases pitch
thyromuscularis: decreases vocal fold tension
What are the 3 parts of the vocal fold structure?
cover
transition
body
what makes up the cover layer of the vocal folds?
epithelium
basement membrane
SLP (Reinke’s Space)
what makes up the transition layer of the vocal folds?
DLP (deep layer of lamina propria)
ILP (intermediate layer of lamina propria)
what makes up the body layer of the vocal folds?
thyroarytenoid muscles
