Lecture 2. Introduction to Cell Structure and Function Flashcards
What are the three properties that living things have ?
- Metabolism
- Growth
- Reproduction
Who proposed the Cell Theory
Schleiden and Schwann
What is the Cell Theory ?
All cells are the fundamental units of life, because a cell is the simplest unit that is capable of independent existence, and all living things are made up of cells
What must a cell have ?
- A genome to code for its structures
- A way to express its genetic information
- A system to utilise energy
- A plasma membrane that controls communication with the outside world
What is the function of the cytosol ?
Contains metabolic pathways
What is the function of the nucleus ?
Contains main genome
What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum ?
Synthesis of most lipids and proteins (for distribution to many organelles and to the plasma membrane)
What is the function of the golgi ?
Modification, sorting and packaging of proteins and lipids for either secretion or delivery to another organelle
What is the function of lysosomes ?
Intracellular degradation
What is the function of the endosome ?
Sorting of endocytosed material
What is the function of mitochondria ?
ATP synthesis by oxidative phosphorylation
What is the function of chloroplasts ?
ATP synthesis and carbon fixation by photosynthesis
What is the function of peroxisomes ?
Oxidation of toxic molecules
What is transmission electron microscopy ?
Looks at thin cross sections of tissue by passing a beam of electrons through a sample
What is scanning electron microscopy ?
Scatters electrons off the surface of the sample and is used to look at the surface details of cells
