lecture 2 - Injury prevention and emergency action Flashcards
1
Q
what is an inciting event?
A
- acting on a scriptable athlete results in an injury
2
Q
injury prevention
A
- one of the most important roles is to minimize activity related injuries
- improve benefit : risk ratio
- can be characterized by being
1. primary
2. secondary
3. tertiary
3
Q
primary prevention
A
- how do we prevent an injury from happening?
- we need to eliminate the event
4
Q
can focus on 1 of 3 dimensions of prevention
A
- athlete (technique, neuromuscular function, conditioning)
- surroundings (floor/surface friction, rules)
- equipment (shoe friction, protective properties)
5
Q
secondary prevention
A
- can be defined as things to protect the athlete should an injurious situation arise.
- more specifically, how can we diminish the effect of the incident
- this includes things like
1. sports equipment, release bindings, helmet technology, shin pads for soccer/ hockey, taping or bracing
2. also includes training proper falling technique, conditioning to strengthen structure so they can tolerate increased force etc.
6
Q
tertiary prevention
A
- focus on reducing the consequences of injury
- how do we improve outcomes?
- may include things like emergency medical coverage, first aid equipment and rehabilitation
7
Q
who are we protecting with an EAP?
A
- civil liability
- criminial liability
8
Q
civil liability
A
- when a person engages in conduct that results in harm to another private individual
9
Q
criminal liability
A
- when a person contravenes social standards as expressed by criminal laws
10
Q
intentional torts
A
- harm was intended to another (assault, battery or false imprisonment)
11
Q
unintentional torts
A
- when a person ought to have foreseen that his or her actions would cause harm a person will be liable of a tort only if he or she intends to do harm to others or is negligent in that reasonable precautions are not taken to prevent foreseeable harm
12
Q
elements of negligence
A
- legal liability for negligence is dependent upon three elements
1. a duty of care
2. a breach of the standard of care
3. damage of injury that results from the breach
13
Q
emergency action plan
A
- a document to be followed in the event of a medical emergency which outlines mutually agreed upon areas of responsibility and methods of delivery, via step-by-step procedures
14
Q
what are the parts of EAP’s?
A
- why do we have EAP’s (where? what? who? how?
- who should be involved in EAP planning? (front office security/facility staff, medical staff, players)
- rehearsal (improve response and detect deficiencies)
- debriefing (living document that incorporates change when they happen)
15
Q
things to think about for a EAP (charge person: runs the show)
A
- who decides when to activate EAP/EMS? (do you trust responder)
- what happens in case of spinal or other life - threatening condition? (i.e. therapist or physician at the head?)
- things to consider (who best to monitor and triage? who has best rapport with athlete?)
- what to do with helmets/shoulder pads? CPR/ spinal - tools?)
