Lecture 2 - Epithelium Flashcards
What are cancers of epithelial tissues called?
carcinomas
What two layers make up the basement membrane?
Basal lamina & reticular lamina
What type of collagen makes up the basal lamina layer?
Type IV
What type of collagen makes up the reticular lamina layer?
Type III
What type of collagen anchors the basal lamina to the reticular lamina?
Type VII
Lining of vascular system (blood/lymph)
Endothelium
Lining of body cavities (peritoneum, pleura, pericardium)
Mesothelium
Where in the body is simple squamous epithelium found?
Endothelium, mesothelium, respiratory spaces (lining), Bowman’s capsule (EMRBC)
Where in the body is stratified squamous epithelium found?
Epidermis, vagina, esophagus, oral cavity (EVEO)
Where in the body is simple cuboidal epithelium found?
Small ducts of exocrine glands, Kidney tubules, Ovary “germinal” epithelium (on outside of ovary) (SDEG K O)
Where in the body is simple columnar epithelium found?
Small intestine, colon, gallbladder, stomach lining, gastric glands (SIC GSGG)
Where in the body is pseudostratified columnar epithelium found?
Trachea, bronchi, ductus deferences, efferent ductules of epididymus (TB DD EDE)
Where in the body is stratified cuboidal epithelium found?
Sweat gland ducts, anorectal junction, large ducts of exocrine glands (SGD AJ LDEG)
Where in the body is stratified columnar epithelium found?
Anorectal junction, LARGEST exocrine gland ducts (salivary) (AJ LDEG)
Where in the body is transitional epithelium found?
Renal calyces, bladder, ureter, urethra (RC B U U)
What is the characteristic pattern/appearance of transitional epithelium (more apparent when not stretched)?
Scalloped
What tissue do glands originate from?
Epithelium
Glands that secrete products onto surface via ducts
Exocrine
Glands w/o ducts that secrete into connective tissue spaces where secretions are absorbed into blood stream by capillaries.
Endocrine (hormones)
List an example of a unicellular gland?
Goblet cell in tracheal epithelium
How is mucous stained by H&E?
Doesn’t stain-translucent
How is mucus stained by PAS?
Stains dark magenta (PAS stains carbohydrates in mucus)
Watery secretions often rich in enzymes
Serous secretions
Contain both mucus and serous substances. What type of gland produces this?
Mixed secretions. Only multicellular glands can produce mixed secretions.
List the mechanisms of secretions (3).
1) Merocrine
2) Apocrine
3) Holocrine
Secretion type where cells release their contents by exocytosis + one example of gland that produces this type of secretion
Merocrine, ex parotid salivary gland
Secretion type where part of the secretory cell apical cytoplasm is released along with the contents + one example of gland that produces this type of secretion
Apocrine, ex lactating mammary gland
Secretion type where entire secretory cell & contents are released + one example of gland that produces this type of secretion
Holocrine, ex sebaceous gland
What are the common shapes of secretory units (3)?
1) Acinar - “sac”
2) Alveolar - flask-like
3) Tubular - straight, coiled, branched
