lecture 2 ch 20 Flashcards
What is the function of lymph fluid, vessels, and capillaries?
eliminate waste from the blood and defends the body against infection
What vessel do lymphatic vessels most closely resemble and how so?
they resemble veins because they have valves and move fluid back to nodes similarly the veins move blood back to
the heart
What is the difference between a lymphatic organ and a lymphoid tissue?
A Lymphatic Organ has Capsules and a lymphoid tissue doesn’t.
What parts of the body do not have lymph nodes
below elbow & Knees
What parts of the body do not have lymph capillaries
bone marrow, epidermis of skin
What are lacteals?
lymphatic capillaries in the small intestine
what do lacteals do?-
absorb nutrients
where are lacteals found?
small intestine
Lymph is a low-pressure system like veins. How is lymph propelled through the vessels?
five mechanisms- valves, skeletal muscle movement, smooth muscle, respiratory action
What are the two types of mature lymphocytes?
T-cell and B-cell
T-Kills viral cells
Made in red bone marrow
Mature in thymus
B-Produces antibodies
Made in red bone marrow
Mature in red bone marrow
Primary lymphoid organs
where lymphocytes mature
Red bone marrow
Thymus gland
Secondary lymphoid organs
where lymphocytes function
Spleen
Lymph nodes
MALT
What are the two main functions of lymph nodes?
filter waste, fight infections
How does the lymph system play a role in cancer?
when cancer cells pass through the lymphatic system they get stuck in the lymph nodes similar to how B and T cells attack harmful substances in the lymph
What is the function of the spleen
regulates levels of WBCs and RBCs and platelets that are damaged
